The process to update the regional, county, and city plans for growth is well underway in the Puget Sound region. Forecasts show the region needs to plan for 1.8 million additional people and 1.2 million new jobs by 2050. The Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) adopted an updated regional plan for managing growth, known as VISION 2050 in October 2020. VISION 2050 will inform countywide growth targets and city comprehensive plans.
City staff will update this page as the regional growth planning process progresses.

Few post on this issue although I think it is the most sensitive issue for citizens, and probably the most important to their neighborhood character.
I think it is hard to overstate the incredible job Salim Nice did as council liaison to the PSRC and GMPC that resulted in a net zero future housing growth target, although past councils agreed to inflated targets we must deal with, mostly for ideological reasons, and in secret.
It is also hard to overstate the incredible job Salim did on working to defeat state bills to upzone residential areas within a half mile of light rail, or our residential neighborhoods in general. Not surprisingly some of the representatives -- including from MI -- who initially pushed these bills received a majority of their campaign donations from builders, developers, and realtor groups.
With a King Co. council subcommittee chaired by Claudia Balducci (ugh) working on housing targets based on AMI, I think one area of compromise would be upzoning town center properties south of 29th to four stories in exchange for the council's FAR proposal for retail. But any changes to the residential zoning should be off the table, including in the CAP.
Our CC majority, in forcing high-urban-population-density on the town center and neighborhoods of Mercer Island, are systematically degrading the quality of life in this community and destroying the qualities that made Mercer Island an attractive place to reside. Thanks to the likes of Bertlin, Grauz, and Bassett and their allies on the current CC, short-platting and upzoning in my neighborhood has caused the destruction of most middle-class housing and a plethora of cookie cutter, Grey-Poupon Mini-Mansions crammed together in my neighborhood. It is having a disastrous impact on our existing businesses in the town center, and causing the increase of traffic gridlock in the TC. It has caused the increase in my taxes, destroyed what was once a spacious, tree-lined ambiance in my neighborhood, and completely altered the character of the neighborhood with the introduction of massive three-story box houses. Responsibility for that damage rests 100% with the liberal ideologues on the Mercer Island City Council and their corrupt appointees on the city planning commission. I hope the next three story boxes that get constructed on MI gets built on either side of YOUR homes.
