PROS Plan on Hold

03 Apr 2020

We hope that during this time you and your family are safe and well. As you may be aware the City is operating under a state of emergency as a result of the COVID-19 response. Our priority is to operate “Essential Services” – services that maintain safety, health, and well-being of the general populace.

With that said, the City of Mercer Island is suspending the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan until we can conduct regular business as a city again.

Our Assessment:

  1. Public meetings are essential to this plan. Not being able to meet significantly impacts our ability to engage the community and to receive feedback for what we have been emphasizing as a community process.
  2. Staff has been reassigned to emergency response roles such as coordinating city-wide logistics, communications, call center staffing, finance and small business support.
  3. Budget - this emergency has significantly impacted our finances, and we are suspending non-essential contract work and trying to push out expenditures.
  4. Timing - completing the PROS Plan in 2021 will be sufficient to qualify for the State grants we need for future projects.

This decision did not come lightly, and we want to ensure when the time comes, we are able to put forward the best product possible. We look forward to engaging with everyone when the time is right. In the meantime, we will continue to accept and respond to public comments on Let’s Talk.

Stay healthy and well!
