Why do Mercer Island playgrounds need to be replaced?

Playground equipment typically has a useful service life of 15 to 20 years, and all Mercer Island play structures are nearing their safe useful service life.

Which playgrounds are being replaced as part of this project?

Over the course of the 16-year parks levy, all Mercer Island play structures will be replaced except for the playground at Mercerdale Park (which was replaced in 2021/2022) and Kenton’s Dragon, the dragon play structure at Deane’s Children’s Park.

The 2023-2028 Parks Capital Improvement Program (CIP) was adopted on March 1, 2022, and planned for five playground structure replacements to occur over the next six years:

    • Aubrey Davis Park Lid B
    • Deane’s Children’s Park (Castle/Swings/Climbing Rock)
    • First Hill Park
    • Aubrey Davis Park Lid B
    • Roanoke Park
    • Secret Park

Will all playgrounds/play areas be made ADA-accessible when they are replaced?

Most Mercer Island playgrounds do not meet ADA or universal accessibility standards and will be evaluated for ADA upgrades as they are replaced. Playgrounds at the following parks/areas have preliminarily been identified as good candidates for ADA improvements:

    • Aubrey Davis Park Lid B
    • Deane’s Children’s Park
    • First Hill Park
    • Luther Burbank Park
    • Mercer Island Community and Event Center
    • Roanoke Park
    • South Mercer Playfields

Potential ADA upgrades will be evaluated as planning for playground replacements at these and other parks get underway. Inclusive and accessible play equipment will also be considered for each replacement.

How can I make sure my favorite playground has the equipment and features I/my kids want?

The City will provide ways for the community to share input about play equipment, play style, and other needs at different times throughout the design process.

All opportunities for community engagement will be shared on Let's Talk when available.

What playground experience does Berger Partnership have?

Berger Partnership has more than 50 years of experience working on a broad range of parks and playgrounds around the Puget Sound region. Recently completed projects include Totem Lake Park in Kirkland; Surrey Downs Park in Bellevue; West Fenwick Park and Van Doren’s Landing Park in Kent; and a new park to open in Bellevue this winter. Berger believes a well-designed playground enriches experiences for children of all ages and abilities by addressing the innate need for play, imagination, and interaction.
