FAQs
Why is the City implementing a Town Center Parking Plan?
The Mercer Island City Council adopted the Town Center Parking Plan in November 2023. The City is interested in addressing concerns related to Town Center parking, including the perception that there is not enough parking or the right type of parking supply available to meet the needs of Town Center visitors. As we prepare for the opening of the Link Light Rail station, we also want to ensure that our permit parking program is adequate and provides Island residents with priority access to public transportation.
Who is implementing the Town Center Parking Plan?
Because the work items identified in the Parking Plan require a broad range of interventions, the work items will be implemented by City Staff in the Community Planning and Development Department, the Public Works Department, the Police Department, the Mercer Island Municipal Court, and the City Manager’s Office.
When will the Parking Plan be implemented?
Work on implementation of the Parking Plan is ongoing. Some works items are dependent on the opening of the Link Light Rail station. Follow the project timeline here on Let's Talk, where we will post updates and milestones as the project evolves.
What outcomes are expected from the implementation of the Parking Plan?
The Parking Plan lists many potential work items, including increasing the parking citation fee, standardizing the time limits of parking in Town Center, updating the Town Center and Residential Parking District parking permits, adding bicycle parking, and creating a wayfinding plan. Most of the work items identified will require the approval of the City Council.
