I am a walker now, but was a recreational bicyclist and bike commuter in the past. We should encourage bike commuting - each is one less car on the roads! With the large number of bicyclists compared to pedestrians, it would be best to have separate paths for each. Bicyclists should also have the option to ride in the street and that may have to be part of the separated path. With increased use of the trail, the chance of a serious bike-pedestrian accident increases. This has already happened at Green Lake and in my home town, Minneapolis. Both places separate wheeled from foot traffic. With the use of shared bikes and other bikes with battery assistance, even inexperienced riders can ride at a fast pace. We do not want to wait for a serious or fatal accident before we separate the trails. Since the park is the major thoroughfare for bike commuters from the Eastside to Seattle, we need to keep safety as a top priority.
