Roundabout Construction is Underway!
Sound Transit contractors have begun work on one of the last major components of the Mercer Island Transit Interchange necessary for rail to open: a new roundabout located at 77th Ave NE and North Mercer Way. Earlier this spring, the houses adjacent to the roadway were removed to prepare the area for a new stormwater vault (installed in early May), roundabout construction, and a stretch of new sidewalk and landscaping. Work on the roundabout is expected to be complete in late 2022; the two images in this update are Sound Transit visualizations. (click here for larger images)
The roundabout will serve as the turnaround for buses after westbound riders are dropped off at the existing bus stop on North Mercer Way. Buses will then circle the roundabout and travel back eastward to pick up riders at the existing bus stop on the south side of North Mercer Way.
Residents should be aware that the westbound right lane and northside sidewalk will be closed until fall of 2022 to accommodate this work. Please be aware of workers along the road, avoid construction areas, and follow detour routes.
