How is this project funded?

The City received grant funding totaling $193,000 through the King County Parks Capital and Open Space Program to support design and construction of the sport courts renovation. Additional funds come from the King County Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Space Levy and the City’s Capital Improvement Fund. A total budget of $545,000 was approved for this project in the 2023-2024 Biennial Budget and Capital Improvement Program. On May 7, the Mercer Island City Council approved additional funds to complete construction (AB 6465), bringing the project budget up to $921,190.

Will the courts still be playable for tennis and other court sports after they are permanently striped for pickleball?

While they are permanently striped for tennis currently, the Luther Burbank Park sport courts are a multiuse facility that can be used for tennis, pickleball, basketball, roller hockey, and other sports/activities played on a paved surface. When the courts are renovated, the facility will continue to be operated as a first-come, first-served, multiuse facility. However, the courts will only be permanently striped for pickleball play.

How long will the courts be closed for construction?

Staff anticipate this project will be fully constructed in time for pickleball play in summer 2024. The courts close on May 21 to prepare for construction, and work is scheduled to begin in early June. Construction will take 12-14 weeks, weather-permitting. Weekly progress updates will be posted on Let's Talk after construction begins.

Will the City provide alternative locations for pickleball play during construction?

The sport courts will be closed during construction. Drop-In pickleball hours are available at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center; view the schedule here.
