Roanoke Park Playground Replacement
Roanoke Park is a neighborhood park located at 70th Avenue SE and West Mercer Way. The park's playground equipment includes ship-themed climbing structures installed in 2004 as well as swings and a Spinami installed in 2012. All structures will be replaced as part of this playground replacement project, and the site will also be evaluated for ADA/accessibility upgrades as part of the process. Additionally, the Berger Partnership, the City's consultant leading design and community engagement for early playground replacements, is developing a site concept that will include improvements to parking and new perimeter fencing.
Construction of the playground renovation began in February 2025 and is expected to last 3-4 months. Follow along here on Let's Talk for weekly construction updates and photos!

Updates for January 2025
Share Updates for January 2025 on Facebook Share Updates for January 2025 on Twitter Share Updates for January 2025 on Linkedin Email Updates for January 2025 linkPermits for the Roanoke Park Playground Replacement project have been issued, and staff, the contractor, and the design team will hold a pre-construction meeting on site later this month. Staff anticipate construction will start in February and last 3-4 months. The main constraint for construction is weather – installing the new accessible play area surfacing requires warm, dry conditions. Allplay Systems and R&R Construction, the contractor and subcontractor for this project, are arranging the construction schedule to be able to take advantage of a good weather window as soon as one hits this spring.
Weekly updates and photos will be posted on Let’s Talk once construction begins. In the meantime, contact Sarah Bluvas, CIP Project Manager, at sarah.bluvas@mercerisland.gov with questions.

Updates for October 2024
Share Updates for October 2024 on Facebook Share Updates for October 2024 on Twitter Share Updates for October 2024 on Linkedin Email Updates for October 2024 linkPermitting is nearing completion for the Roanoke Park Playground Replacement, and staff are working with Berger and Allplay Systems to execute a contract with R&R Construction to construct the project.
This playground renovation includes new poured-in-place playground surfacing, which will provide full access to play and gathering opportunities for people with mobility challenges. Installation of the surfacing requires warm weather. (Community members probably remember waiting for a good weather window to install playground surfacing at Mercerdale Park in 2022!) Rather than chance the weather this fall, construction will start in early 2025 and will be sequenced with construction of the First Hill Park playground replacement. A construction timeline will be shared on Let’s Talk once it’s been confirmed.
Staff anticipate opening both new playgrounds in spring 2025. The playground at Roanoke Park will remain open until construction begins.
Before the new playground opens, other related site improvements will be completed and include installing a new park sign, building a new perimeter fence, and restoring the public art sculpture Totem. A section of the new fence was installed as an Eagle Scout project this summer, and City crews will finish the fence over time.

Q&A from Virtual Public Meeting on 01.30.24
- Heights are an important element of playgrounds. How does the proposed “exciting heights” 5-12 climbing structure compare to the existing playground height?
- Roanoke Park is currently known as the “Pirate Ship” park. Is it possible to maintain this theme or bring in another exciting theme?
- Is the soft surface going to be similar to the surface used at the Mercerdale Park playground?
- For all Mercer Island playgrounds: Are they all designed for all ages, or are some playgrounds designed specifically for 2 to 5-year-olds and others specifically for older kids?
