Amendment 9: Disaster Planning

WHAT: The City is proposing a Comprehensive Plan amendment to update the Land Use element to create goals and policies related to the City's current community emergency preparedness and planning efforts.

WHY: This Comprehensive Plan amendment would create policy language supporting continued coordination with local, regional, and state agencies and organizations and further enhancing the City's disaster preparedness.


Amendment 10: Universal Design, Disability Access and Age-Friendly Planning

WHAT: The City is proposing a Comprehensive Plan amendment to update the Housing and Land Use elements to create support for single family residential development that incorporates universal design, disability access, and/or age-friendly design components.

WHY: This Comprehensive Plan amendment would provide support for housing that is accessible and visitable for all life stages and abilities, encouraging universal design and aging in place. These goals and policies provide a framework for future regulations that could incentivize this type of housing.


Amendment 11: Green Building

WHAT: The City is proposing a Comprehensive Plan amendment to amend the Land Use element to include green building goals and policies for residential development. This Comprehensive Plan amendment would create policy language supporting green building methods and materials as well as certification programs such as LEED, Built Green, the Living Building Challenge, etc). It also creates a framework for future regulations that incentivize or require the use of green building techniques in new construction, directs the city to educate and provide resources to residents and the building community related to green building, and establishes a policy of tracking structures verified under the various green building programs as a park of the City's sustainability performance measures.

WHY: The intent of this amendment is to increase the use of green building techniques and enhance the sustainability of structures on the Island.

Commenting Closed: The 2018 Comprehensive Plan Amendments were approved by City Council on November 20, 2018
